Birthday

How do you celebrate your birthday?  Many might celebrate with a birthday cake. Well, I cooked for myself some birthday  noodles. Birthday noodles or 寿面 are not just ordinary noodles. They literally mean “long-life noodles”.  It is believed that the longer the noodles, the bigger the chances are for your wish for a long life to come true. These noodles also have to be eaten in a special way, without breaking it into pieces.

When my  mother was still alive, from my childhood to well into my 50s just before her departure to heaven, she had consistently without fail boiled 2 red coloured hard boiled eggs红鸡蛋 for me and I must eat both at the same time.

An egg is a symbol of birth.  2 eggs coming in a pair is even number, considered good luck. Red is the auspicious color for every Chinese, as red symbolizes good luck and fortune.

Well, I forgot to buy red coloured food dye, so I skipped the red egg this year.  Will do better next year.

As a tradition our family normally celebrates each other's birthdays with a dinner at a fancy restaurant.  Since our movement is restricted by the covid 19 movement control orders , we had take-away pizzas instead.
