Children as young as five work in the mines!

While Jharkhand is mineral-rich, a majority of its people are dirt poor. In India, 28 million children work to supplement their families' meager income. At least 400,000 children between the ages of five and 14 work in Jharkhand, many in the coal mines. Illegal coal mining by children is tragic daily routine in Jharkhand.

In my garden now I have 11 varieties of herbs, popularly used in Malaysian cuisine, not that I am a very great cook though!

Lime is used to make the ever popular

dishes
Basil is used in many Thai, Vietnamese
and Malaysian dishes
Bunga telang (clitoria) is used to give the
blue  colour to nyonya delicacies and the blue colour to
rice in nasi kerabu (blue rice served with
a variety of fresh vegetables/ herbs)
Kaduk gives a very distinctive taste to some
Malaysian dishes
Screwpine leaves are ever so important in the
making of Malaysian delicacies and deserts
to add aroma
Daun kesom or hot mint leaves are an essential
ingredient in some Malaysian dishes, also used as a
condiment for laksa
Kafir lime leaves are used extensively in Thai cooking,
like tomyam, also used in Malaysian curries and rending.

Mint leaves are a must for Malaysia's

When I was young

These 2 paintings and the small side table were retrieved from Father and Mother's house of 52 years after it was sold.  We moved into the house in 1961 and it was sold after father's passing on 25 Jan 2013.  These 3 items were among other things which were abandoned and discarded.

I am glad I retrieved them.  Although not new, the items are looking quite nice in a corner of my house and will always also serve to remind me of my life with my parents when I was young.

Aerobic Exercise May Help Reduce Risk for Dementia

Rita Hayworth, American actress
A Study by Dr. Ahlskog showed that any aerobic physical activity that raises the heart rate and increases the body's need for oxygen may reduce the risk for dementia.   Dr. Ahlskog noted that the amount of exercise needed to derive brain benefits has not been clearly defined. However, he said, "exercise sufficient to elevate the heart rate to about 60% of maximum, and done for about 150 minutes a week [divided], would be a good starting recommendation.

Dr Ahlskog said that "Regular aerobic exercise of any type" should be encouraged.

Ronald Reagan 40th President of the USA
He said it is important to note that not all exercise requires good legs and balance. "Gyms have a variety of exercise machines used in the sitting position, whereas swimming also is an excellent aerobic exercise."  "Not to be forgotten," he added, "are the routine things that we sometimes defer to others," such as raking leaves, shoveling snow, and cutting the grass with a nonsitting mower.

Gardening an instrument of grace

I had actually picked up a new hobby since I moved into this new neighbourhood on 10 Jan 2010.   I had asked myself why?  Why should I "waste" the time that I could use for other pursuits?  My answer?  Maybe I started planting to follow the crowd, since my sister is doing it and since friends are doing it.  Then slowly I began to realize... gardening is therapeutic, it is relaxing, it improves my mood, it gives me something to look forward to and most of all it gives me much joy in seeing the plants grow and flower.

Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace - May Sarton
