Plants that come with memories

These plants were lovingly cared by my Mother who departed for Heaven 22 years ago.  They are now in my possession.  So these must be at least 22 years old or more. Hopefully, I will be able to keep them alive as long as I can.

In every change there is some pain

Families are the compass that guides us

Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.

Qian Nian Jian

Homalomena is a perennial type of garden plant found worldwide, especially in the tropical and humid climates of Central America and Asia. It can reach a height of approximately nine inches, with dark, heart-shaped green leaves. The Chinese name for homalomena is 'qian nian jian', which means 'thousand years of health'. The rhizomes of homalomena are used in herbal preparations.

Homalomena 'Emerald Gem' - this plant is popular for its dark-green and heart-shaped foliage. It is a very hardy plant in low to medium lighting.

My Homalomena rubescens/ emerald gem/ qian nian jian, which was rescued
from outside of a house, abandoned by the previous owner after they moved house.
The plant has grown much bigger after about 6 months.
Surprised to find it flowering this morning!

Embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ― Albert Einstein

Dragonflies are sensitive to pollution

A very attractive deep red dragonfly visited my back lane garden today. The picture does not do it justice

I read that dragonflies are extremely choosy about their habitat. They do not like to lay their eggs in polluted water bodies. If you happen to see dragonflies around, it is a sign that the ecosystem is in a good condition. One thing is sure, dragonflies are sensitive to pollution.

A Mother's responsibilities

God has given her an instinct to provide for her children, nurture them, and protect them. In a family, the mother's role has traditionally been to raise the children and take care of household chores. However in reality, many mothers have multiple roles, such as working at a full-time job, keep house and provide for the children at the same time. Mothers do all that without expecting anything in return.  But she also looks forward to the time for her responsibilities to be eased.  May Allah bless us.

I like this heliconia which I nurtured from a plant discarded by a neighbour about 10 houses down the road.
I call it lobster claws.  It' s graceful, tall, hardy and does not require much care.

Life is about change

The exceptional Epiphyllum oxypetalum

Epiphyllum oxypetalum (Dutchman's pipe cactus or queen of the night) is a species of cactus and one of the most cultivated species in the genus. E. oxypetalum blooms rarely and only at night, and its flowers wilt before dawn.

In India it is called Brahma Kamalam, named after the Hindu god of creation, Lord Brahma. It is believed that the wishes of people who pray to God while the flower is blooming will be fulfilled.

The Chinese use this flower (tan-hua; 曇花) to describe someone who has an impressive but very brief moment of glory, like a "flash in a pan," since an Epiphyllum oxypetalum plant might bloom only once a year . Therefore, someone described as "曇花一現" is generally understood to be a person who shows off or unexpectedly gains some achievement and is thought to be an exception or only lucky.

The flower also has a rich history in Japan, where it is known as the 月下美人 (Gekka Bijin) or "Beauty under the Moon". In Sri Lanka it is called "Kadupul" which means the flower from heaven. In Indonesia it is called "Wijaya Kusuma" which means "Flower of Triumph".
