Happy new year

2020 has been a tough year.  God permits, I hope 2021  will be much much better.

Birthday

How do you celebrate your birthday?  Many might celebrate with a birthday cake. Well, I cooked for myself some birthday  noodles. Birthday noodles or 寿面 are not just ordinary noodles. They literally mean “long-life noodles”.  It is believed that the longer the noodles, the bigger the chances are for your wish for a long life to come true. These noodles also have to be eaten in a special way, without breaking it into pieces.

When my  mother was still alive, from my childhood to well into my 50s just before her departure to heaven, she had consistently without fail boiled 2 red coloured hard boiled eggs红鸡蛋 for me and I must eat both at the same time.

An egg is a symbol of birth.  2 eggs coming in a pair is even number, considered good luck. Red is the auspicious color for every Chinese, as red symbolizes good luck and fortune.

Well, I forgot to buy red coloured food dye, so I skipped the red egg this year.  Will do better next year.

As a tradition our family normally celebrates each other's birthdays with a dinner at a fancy restaurant.  Since our movement is restricted by the covid 19 movement control orders , we had take-away pizzas instead.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure

I actually found this caladium by the road side one month ago in a neighbour's trash box.  Why would anyone throw away a beautiful plant like this?

The saying is something like, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” or “one man’s garbage is another man’s gold”. What is of little value to one person, may in fact be of great value to another person.

Birthday dinner

In our family it has become a tradition to have birthday dinners.
We have birthdays in April, September and November

The beauty of silence

Never underestimate the power of silence. Some of the most profound insights come from the quietest of places. ~Author Unknown

I need to learn my lesson, silence is golden

Governance

In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of.

Mother abuse

International evidence suggests that in advanced welfare states the abuse of parents, most particularly mothers, by their (most frequently male) adolescent children is increasingly prevalent. In the United Kingdom, however, child-to-mother abuse remains one of the most under-acknowledged and under-researched forms of family violence.

Covid-19

I have not been in the right mood to make any blog entry for almost a month.  The whole world is in a state of despair.  The world will never be the same again.

Malaysia announced its first Covid-19 cases on Jan 25 involving three China tourists who had entered Malaysia via Johor from Singapore on Jan 23. The number of cases then rose to 22 by Feb 16, representing a first wave of cases. A second wave of cases began on Feb 27 and since then the number of people affected by the coronavirus has risen to more than 1,000.

To stem the number of new cases, the government imposed a two week Movement Control Order starting March 18 to March 31.  The MCO was then extended twice, with current phase to end on April 28.

Today the situation in the country is as follows:

Date
Total cases
New cases
Total deaths
Total recovered
19-April
5389
84
89
3197

Nature blessed me with a peace lily plant

I was pleasantly surprised a few months ago when a peace lily plant sprouted in my backyard.  It grew very fast and now it has blessed me with one flower.

Peace lilies symbolize peace, prosperity, tranquility, solitude and purification. Feng Shui recommends placing of peace lilies at home or workplace, to balance the energies.

Makes no difference anyway

The word politics conjures images of government, politicians and their policies, but also corruption and dirty tricks. This week I witnessed horrible politics at its worst, to say the least!  I give up!  It makes no difference anyway.

CNY 26 Jan 2020

Chinese New Year has its beginnings in the ancestor worship of the ancient Shang dynasty people.  However, today CNY is about spending time with family and sharing blessings and abundance with family and friends.

Daily moments

Disputed sources listed the following:
- Hilary Cooper
- Maya Angelou
- George Carlin
- a Carleton greeting card in the 1970′s

In fact, life cannot be measured by only the breathless moments alone; but even the normal daily moments as well.
